James Maddison and Harvey Barnes scored the goals as Leicester City recorded a 2-0 win over West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Youri Tielemans missed a first-half penalty for the Foxes, but Barnes added to an early goal from Maddison to secure all three points for Brendan Rodgers's side, who now sit 12th in the table on 17 points.

The defeat, meanwhile, has left West Ham in 16th position on 14 points, just one point outside of the relegation zone, with the Hammers suffering their ninth league defeat of what has been a disappointing campaign thus far.

Leicester were dangerous in the early exchanges, with Tielemans drawing a smart save from Lukasz Fabianski in just the third minute of the contest, but the West Ham United goalkeeper could not prevent the visitors from taking the lead in the eighth minute of the contest.

Indeed, Maddison, fresh from his England call up for the World Cup, found the roof of the net with an impressive finish after a low cross from Patson Daka.

Declan Rice fired over the Leicester goal in the 18th minute, before Fabianski had to keep out a strike from Daniel Amartey down the other end of the field.

Maddison had to be withdrawn in the 25th minute of the match after seemingly suffering a hamstring problem, which might put his World Cup spot in doubt.

West Ham had another opportunity in the 28th minute when smart work from Lucas Paqueta and Tomas Soucek eventually released Said Benrahma, but his effort was saved by Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward.

Paqueta headed one over for West Ham before Soucek had a goal disallowed for offside, but Leicester passed up a golden chance to double their advantage from the penalty spot late in the first period.

Following a VAR check, which led to the referee going to the pitch-side monitor, Craig Dawson was penalised for a foul on Daka, but Tielemans saw his spot kick saved by Fabianski.

Gianlucca Scamacca headed a Jarrod Bowen corner over the crossbar in the 52nd minute before Soucek missed the target four minutes later, with Leicester still boasting a one-goal advantage heading for the hour mark.

Rice was next to try his luck for the home side, planting a header over the crossbar in the 59th minute, but Leicester scored a second in the 78th minute through Barnes, who raced onto a pass from Ayoze Perez before slotting the ball past Fabianski.

Maddison's fitness will now be a major talking point, but the attacker appeared in good spirits in the second half, suggesting that his withdrawal might have been a precaution. body check tags ::
