Arouna Kone scored one and provided another as Wigan Athletic took a 2-1 lead into the break over high-flying Everton at the DW Stadium.
The summer arrival from Sevilla firstly netted his third Latics goal by heading in from Shaun Maloney's cross at the near post, although there were claims for offside from the Everton defence.
Wigan's advantage lasted just ninety seconds as Nikica Jelavic equalised for the Toffees with his third goal in his last two outings.
Everton owed their parity to a slice of fortune however as Steven Pienaar's attempted shot unintentionally found Jelavic at the back post for the Croat to calmly finish past Ali Al-Habsi.
As the visitors applied the pressure, Kone led a Wigan counter attack and after a surging run, cut the ball back for Franco Di Santo to smartly finish under pressure from Phil Jagielka.
England international Leighton Baines struck the post against his former club towards the end of the opening period, but Wigan survived the scare to secure a surprise half-time advantage.
