A startling first-half performance from Wigan Athletic has given Roberto Martinez's side a 4-0 lead over Newcastle United
The visitors came closest to opening the scoring in the early exchanges but Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse headed Yohan Cabaye's cross over the bar from close range.
It was Wigan who took the lead in the 13th minute as Victor Moses collected a pass from Emmerson Boyce before converting his shot into the top corner.
Moses doubled his tally and Wigan's lead just two minutes later when he managed to shoot past Tim Krul following good work from Jean Beausejour.
Cisse was Newcastle's main threat in the first period and Ali Al-Habsi had to react well to stop the forward's effort.
Shaun Maloney extended Wigan's lead with 10 minutes of the first half remaining as he found space on the edge of the area and powered his shot past the helpless Krul.
Demba Ba had Newcastle's final chance of the first half but his long-range shot failed to test Al-Habsi.
On the stroke of half time Franco Di Santo completed a dramatic first half as the striker picked up the ball from nearly 35 yards out before firing his shot into the top corner to make it 4-0 at the halfway stage.
