MP urges Wigan Athletic not to employ Malky Mackay

Wigan Athletic are urged not to employ Malky Mackay as their new manager by local Labour MP Lisa Nandy.

A local MP has urged Wigan Athletic to not appoint Malky Mackay as the club's new manager.

Mackay was sacked as Cardiff City manager last year and was later accused of sending sexist, racist and homophobic text messages.

As a result of Mackay's alleged actions, Labour MP for Wigan Lisa Nandy has said that the club should only appoint somebody who shows necessary "respect" to people in all walks of life.

"I have been contacted by a number of constituents and Wigan Athletic supporters who have asked me to voice their concern in response to press reports suggesting the potential appoint of Malky Mackay as manager of Wigan Athletic," Nandy wrote in a letter to club chariman Dave Whelan.

"A football manager has a crucial position in the community and is a role model, especially for young people.

"I understand that no decision has been made at this time, but I am sure Wigan Athletic would not appoint anyone without ensuring first that they have respect for other people regardless of gender, sexuality, ethnicity or religion."

In response to Nandy's letter, Wigan chief executive Jonathan Jackson has said that there are no clear frontrunners for the job, which was vacated following the sacking of Uwe Rosler yesterday.

He told Sky Sports News: "We have not discussed any individual or drawn up a shortlist, never mind actually contacting any potential candidates or their agents."

Wigan currently lie 22nd in the Championship after a disastrous run which has seen them win just once since August.
