Wigan Athletic have defiantly claimed that they will "bounce back" from relegation to League One, adding that nothing less that an immediate return to the Championship next season will suffice.
Rotherham United's 2-1 victory over Reading on Tuesday evening put the Millers on 45 points and condemned the Latics, second from bottom on 39 points, to the third tier of English football with a game to go.
A statement on the official Wigan website said: "It's a sad day for everyone associated with Wigan Athletic but we will bounce back, I want that to be the main message to our fans tonight.
"Our only target next season is promotion, nothing else will suffice and the job of rebuilding the club is already well under way under Gary Caldwell and his staff."
Wigan won the FA Cup just two seasons ago.
