Newcastle United's Champions League hopes have been dealt a blow by Wigan Athletic following a 4-0 victory for Roberto Martinez's team at the DW Stadium.
It only took Martinez's side 13 minutes to open the scoring and it was Victor Moses who made the breakthrough as he collected a pass from Emmerson Boyce before placing his shot in the top corner of Tim Krul's goal.
Victor Moses doubled his tally for the afternoon two minutes later as he placed his shot past Krul following excellent work from Jean Beausejour.
Papiss Cisse was providing the only threat to Wigan's defence in the first half but Ali Al-Habsi managed to comfortably deal with the Senegalese striker's long-range shot.
Roberto Martinez's side continued to improve and they were 3-0 up in the 36th minute when Shaun Maloney found space inside the area before slotting past Krul.
The first-half score managed to get even better for Martinez before the break as Franco Di Santo fired past Krul from nearly 35 yards.
Moses almost managed to complete his hat-trick in the second half but Krul was on hand to deny the former Crystal Palace youngster.
Cisse had Newcastle's best chance of the match so far but Al-Habsi was alert to deny the striker.
It was Cisse once again who came closest to scoring for the Magpies but his header from Hatem Ben Arfa's cross struck the post and Wigan finished as comfortable winners.
