Wolfsburg were unable to win their seventh home league game in a row as SC Paderborn clung on for a point at Volkswagen Arena.
The hosts dominated for much of the game and took the lead in the 17th minute when Rafa Lopez tried to clear Vieirinha's header across goal but only managed to divert it into his own net.
On the half-hour mark they had the perfect chance to go two in front from the penalty spot after Christian Strohdiek's foul, but Ivan Perisic's effort was saved in the bottom corner by Lukas Kruse.
Despite the miss, Wolfsburg continued to pile forward and were again close to a second when Bas Dost's powerful shot came back off the crossbar.
Paderborn held firm until half time and then struck a surprise equaliser in the 51st minute when Alban Meha did what Perisic couldn't by tucking home a penalty after Naldo had impeded Strohdiek in the box.
Wolfsburg hadn't conceded at home in their last four games while Paderborn broke their three-game away drought.
Marvin Bakalorz almost stole the win for the visitors late on, while Nicklas Bendtner was denied by Kruse in added time.
Wolfsburg remain safely in second, but they drop nine points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. A point moves Paderborn up to 10th.
