Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Kenny Jackett defends his decision to only introduce Joe Mason as a late substitute against Birmingham City.

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Kenny Jackett has said that he waited until the 85th minute to introduce Joe Mason as a substitute against Birmingham City because of defensive reasons.

Jackett's side struggled to create opportunities during the second half of the West Midlands derby, resulting in calls for Mason to be brought on to boost Wolves' chances in the final third.

However, while acknowledging that his team need to score more goals, Jackett has insisted that it was important to maintain their solidarity at the back too.

The 54-year-old is quoted by the Express & Star as saying: "It was a period where we needed more, definitely, and it did look like a set piece either end was going to be a key. So making sure we had our defensive setup was very important.

"It's been difficult for us to get to two up front, which ultimately I think Joe does need. We've lost a lot of goals in our side, even in recent weeks with James Henry and Dave Edwards, who are capable of scoring. We need to find a new equation to get goals. I'm sure Joe will be part of that."

Wolves are next in action when they travel to Championship leaders Burnley on Saturday.
