Roger Johnson: 'Blame the players, not Mick McCarthy'

Wolves captain Roger Johnson tells fans to blame the players, and not manager Mick McCarthy, for their recent run of bad form.

Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Roger Johnson has told fans to blame the players for their recent bad run, and not manager Mick McCarthy.

The Wolves boss was rounded on by supporters during Saturday's 2-2 draw with Swansea City when, at 2-0 down, they sang "you don't know what you're doing" as he made tactical changes.

The Midlands club scored two late goals to salvage a point, and Johnson insists that the manager is the man to get them back to winning ways.

"He knows very well what he's doing because he is an exceptional manager who has done great things for this club," he said. "And as for the sack, we can only hope the board wasn't listening to that sort of thing because it was below the belt. They should stick by the boss and point the finger where it belongs - at us, the players.

"Fans are fickle and in the gaffer's case they have short memories. He was a hero when we started the side with three wins on the trot and when he kept the club up last season. Yet here they are calling for him to be sacked.

"They booed when he made the changes but I hope they are looking at what happened and asking themselves honestly who was right in the end."

Wolves, who are currently in 17th place in the Premier League table, host Manchester City in the Carling Cup fourth round on Wednesday.
