Head coach Julen Lopetegui has suggested that he has every confidence that his Wolverhampton Wanderers side can compete with any team in the Premier League.

Lopetegui suffered his first defeat in charge of Wolves on New Year's Eve as his side succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford came off the substitutes' bench to score the only goal of the contest at Molineux to move United into the top four of the standings.

From Wolves' perspective, they frequently posed a threat to United without creating clear-cut chances, although David de Gea was forced into a point-blank save from a Raul Jimenez header deep into added-on time.

As a result of suffering their 10th defeat in 17th matches this campaign, Wolves remaining in the Premier League relegation zone.

Despite the disappointment of being edged out by United in the West Midlands, Lopetegui has suggested that he will take the positives from his team's performance.

Speaking to BT Sport, the Spaniard said: "Always when you lose, it is difficult. We don't want to lose, we want to win the match. We showed that we are able to compete with any team but it was a pity.

"I think that the goals are coming after good work and we are working as a team in and out of possession. Maybe we didn't have the best decision making in the box. We had five or six good situations to damage them but we have good chances.

"The players have to believe in themselves. We have to have balanced thinking in the next match knowing that the only way is to keep working and to improve."

Wolves now play two games away from Molineux, first facing Aston Villa in the top flight on January 4 before they square off versus Liverpool in the FA Cup three days later. body check tags ::
