Legendary Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Roy Swinbourne has died at the age of 86, the club have confirmed.

Swinbourne scored 107 goals for the Midlands side in 211 league appearances between 1945 and 1957, and was instrumental to Wolves winning their first ever top-flight title in the 1953-54 season.

The Express & Star reports that Swinbourne passed away in a nursing home in Kidderminster on Sunday morning following a long battle with vascular dementia.

"He was the most kind man you could ever think of," said wife Betty. "He loved his family and friends, loved people and was wonderful with children. He had a smile that made everybody love him back and he was such a warm soul.

"Everything he turned his hand to in life he was a success at, whether that was football, work or his family."

Swinbourne retired in 1957 due to a knee injury then went on to launch his own tyre business in the Midlands.
