Wolverhampton Wanderers fall to their first defeat in eight games as they are beaten 3-1 at home by Huddersfield Town.

Wolverhampton Wanderers missed the chance to move to the top of the Championship as they were beaten 3-1 at home by Huddersfield Town this evening to suffer their first loss in eight games.

The home side came agonisingly close to opening the scoring after just six minutes, but captain Sam Ricketts saw his 20-yard strike ping back off the upright.

Nouha Dicko then raced through on goal, but was denied by the legs of Alex Smithies as Wolves looked the better side in the opening quarter of the game.

However, Huddersfield took the lead against the run of play in the 21st minute when Harry Bunn volleyed home from Grant Holt's accurate right-wing cross.

Jacob Butterfield then saw his shot saved on the break, but Sean Scannell doubled the advantage of the visitors in the 39th minute with a deflected strike as Wolves trailed by two goals at half time.

Conor Coady made it 3-0 six minutes after the break with his first goal for Huddersfield, as his powerful 25-yard drive nestled in the back of the net.

Bunn then came close to his second of the night, but Carl Ikeme pushed away his shot.

Bakary Sako grabbed a goal back for the home side when he collected Dicko's knockdown and muscled his way into the area before firing a low shot into the net as Wolves looked to mount an unlikely comeback.

Danny Batth then headed just over the bar before Sako and Dicko peppered the Huddersfield goal in the late stages, but the visitors defended stoutly to bring Wolves' impressive run to an end.
