Pablo Sarabia's first-half header proved enough to guide Wolverhampton Wanderers to a narrow 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Molineux.

The Blades had a couple of chances to go ahead before Wolves took the lead on the half-hour mark courtesy of Sarabia's flicked header.

Sheffield United put Wolves under pressure in the second period, but they were unable to convert their moments of promise into an equaliser, ensuring that they fell to a third defeat in four Premier League matches.

The win lifts Wolves up to eighth position as they continue their bid for European qualification, while Sheffield United remain rooted to the bottom of the table and eight points adrift from safety.

Although Wolves started the brightest, the best chance of the opening 20 minutes fell to Sheffield United forward Rhian Brewster.

The former Liverpool striker saw his initial effort blocked by Craig Dawson, before his follow-up shot was kept out by Jose Sa at the near post.

Sheffield United were then presented with a golden opportunity as James McAtee raced through on goal, only to fire his effort straight at the Wolves goalkeeper.

The Manchester City loanee was made to rue that miss when Sarabia netted his third goal of the campaign to give Wolves a 31st-minute lead.

Sarabia produced a clinical header to divert the ball into the top corner from Rayan Ait-Nouri's inswinging delivery.

Sheffield United's frustration was evident moments later when teammates Vini Souza and Jack Robinson were involved in a face-to-face confrontation, leading to a VAR review which ultimately decided that no further action was needed.

The Blades showed great intent following the half-time interval, with Brewster forcing Sa into action after meeting McAtee's far-post cross.

While Wolves struggled to find their best form after the break, Sarabia threatened to add to his tally in the 66th minute when he fizzed a long-range effort past Ivo Grbic's goal.

At the opposite end of the pitch, Chris Wilder's side continued to desperately search for an elusive equaliser, but they were unable to break through a resolute Wolves backline, as the hosts stood firm to claim a second straight home victory.

Gary O'Neil's side will finish the weekend one point behind seventh-placed Brighton & Hove Albion and six points adrift of Manchester United in sixth position. body check tags ::
