Carlos Sainz Jnr will start in pole position for the first time in his career for Sunday's British Grand Prix.

The Spaniard finds himself off the pace in the Drivers' Standings, three retirements in nine races leaving him 73 points adrift of leader Max Verstappen.

However, at a wet Silverstone, the 27-year-old ended his 150-race wait to begin a Grand Prix on pole with a lap which edged out the Championship frontrunner.

The Ferrari driver was the only man on the grid to clock under one minute 41 seconds, Sainz finishing less than two tenths of a second ahead of Verstappen.

At one stage, Verstappen appeared on his way to a comfortable pole, but the Dutchman failed to improve on his fastest time on his final flying lap.

On a plus note, he ended Q3 ahead of rivals Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez, the latter and his Red Bull teammate having to settle for fourth spot.

Lewis Hamilton, who is bidding to win his fourth successive British Grand Prix, was a respectable fifth in his Mercedes, the seven-time world champion being joined on the third row by compatriot Lando Norris.

Fernando Alonso and Hamilton's teammate George Russell were seventh and eighth respectively, with Zhou Guanyu and Nicolas Latifi completing the top 10. body check tags ::
