Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr has secured pole position for Sunday's United States Grand Prix.

On a day where it was announced that Red Bull co-owner Dietrich Mateschitz had passed away at the age of 78, already-crowned world champion Max Verstappen went into qualifying looking to end a sad day for the team and the sport on a small high note.

However, for just the third time in his career, it was Sainz Jr who will start the race at Texas in pole having edged out Verstappen by less than a 10th of a second.

While it was Sainz's teammate Charles Leclerc who finished in second spot in Q3, he must serve a 10-place grid penalty, leaving Verstappen to be promoted to the front row.

Sergio Perez must also serve a five-place penalty, allowing for Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton to advance to third on the grid despite qualifying in fifth.

Teammate George Russell will join his British compatriot on the second row, with Lance Stroll and Lando Norris fifth and sixth in the Aston Martin and McLaren respectively.
