McLaren Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso is released from hospital following last Sunday's pre-season testing crash in Barcelona.

McLaren Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has been released from hospital after spending three days under medical care following last weekend's crash in Barcelona.

The Spaniard was airlifted to hospital on Sunday after crashing his McLaren during his 21st lap of the track during pre-season testing.

The two-time world champion suffered concussion and underwent CT and MRI scans, but no serious injuries were found and McLaren confirmed that the 33-year-old would remain in hospital for "peaceful recuperation".

Now, it has been confirmed that Alonso was deemed well enough to be discharged from hospital today, but will not drive in this week's final test.

A statement from McLaren read: "We are pleased to confirm that Fernando Alonso has now left hospital. He has returned to his family's home in Spain for further rest and recuperation.

"As a result, he will sit out this week's final winter test, at which he was due to share driving duties with Jenson Button. Kevin Magnussen, McLaren-Honda's test and reserve driver, will replace him.

"Jenson will be testing the McLaren-Honda car tomorrow (February 26), and the team will confirm the full day-to-day running order in due course."

The 2015 Formula 1 season gets underway next month in Melbourne with the Australian Grand Prix.
