McLaren's 'mini DRS' rear wing under scrutiny after Baku

The legality of McLaren's rear wing design may now be attracting attention in the Formula 1 world.

Amid a strong 2024 season that sees McLaren push to the front of the grid, Red Bull recently raised concerns over the apparent flexibility of the team's papaya-coloured front wing.

Despite these suspicions, the FIA ruled that McLaren's front wing design was legal.

However, following the Azerbaijan GP, images of McLaren's current rear wing have circulated on social media and in media outlets such as Spain's Diario Sport and France's Auto Hebdo.

The images reveal that when McLaren's 2024 car reaches high speeds, the rear wing flattens, revealing two noticeable gaps at the far edges. This occurrence has been referred to as a 'mini DRS' by some.

It remains unclear exactly how long the Baku-spec rear wing has been used on the car, but McLaren's team boss, Andrea Stella, had confirmed that an upgrade had been made to the car in this area before Zandvoort.

"This rear wing should give us a bit more downforce, with a similar amount of drag," Stella stated at the time. "So it should help us move forward a bit more."

In Baku, Stella also confirmed that more car upgrades were in the pipeline.

"Yes, we are still working on upgrades for this season," he said. "We are currently finalising them."

When questioned about whether the new parts would appear in Singapore this weekend, Stella responded with a smile: "We'll see."

"I don't want to give away too much about what we are doing and when it will happen. But we have a plan to make the car faster."

"I often hear that we have the best car, but you don't see that on many circuits. We had no advantage here over Ferrari and not even over Red Bull," Stella added.
