Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton will start the Italian Grand Prix on pole position - his fifth at Monza.

Defending Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has taken pole for the fifth time at Monza for this Sunday's Italian Grand Prix.

The 31-year-old Brit has matched the Monza records of Juan Manuel Fangio and Aryton Senna following a dominant display in qualifying.

Hamilton will be joined by his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg on the front row of the grid after the German driver finished almost half a second slower.

It will be an all-Ferrari second row as Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen took third and fourth respectively, while Williams's Valtteri Bottas is fifth and Daniel Ricciardo will start sixth on the grid in his Red Bull.

Fernando Alonso, who has claimed pole on this track twice before, was in danger of dropping out at Q1, but just scraped through by a tenth of a second and eventually finished in P13.

Romain Grosjean, who recorded the 12th-fastest lap, was issued with a five-place grid penalty prior to qualifying due to a gearbox change in his Haas.

Manor's Esteban Ocon, who is competing in just his second grand prix, had a disappointing session as he slid off the track in Q1.

Top 10 on the grid:

1. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
2. Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)
3. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari)
4. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari)
5. Valtteri Bottas (Williams)
6. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull)
7. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
8. Sergio Perez (Force India)
9. Nico Hulkenberg (Force India)
10. Esteban Gutierrez (Haas)
