The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles will take place between September 26 and 28, it was announced today.
The Jack Nicklaus-designed Centenary Course in Perthshire will host the biennial battle between Europe and USA for only the second time despite Scotland being regarded as the home of golf.
Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister, said: "As the home of golf, Scotland is well placed to host the best Ryder Cup in the competition's history when it arrives at Gleneagles in 2014.
"It is the ultimate inspiration [for children] - the greatest players in the world in golf-to-golf combat here in one of the greatest venues in the world."
Before the event at Gleneagles the next Ryder Cup will be held at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois next September.
Team Europe are current holders and have won four of the last five contests.
