The world number 507 hit six birdies in a bogey-free round of 64 to edge ahead of Spanish compatriot Miguel Angel Jimenez and Australia's Andrew Dodt.
Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal was part of a group of four players that finished on four-under-par, which also included YE Yang.
Italy's Matteo Manassero, who won last week's Singapore Open, was a shot further back on three-under-par.
