Jason Day: 'Losing world number one ranking is not a let down'

Jason Day insists that losing the world number one ranking to Jordan Spieth is not a "let down", but rather a motivation to reclaim it.

Australian golfer Jason Day has insisted that dropping from the world number one ranking is not a "massive low".

The 27-year-old held the top spot for just one week as Jordan Spieth leapfrogged him after winning the Tour Championship at East Lake on Sunday.

For the first time in the sport's history, the number one ranking changed between three golfers - Spieth, Day and Rory McIlroy - for six consecutive weeks.

"Everyone thinks that [losing the ranking] is going to be a massive low," pga.com quotes Day as saying. "It's good to be number one, but it never changed me anyway - the way that I was as a person, the way that I worked.

"It's not a let down at all actually. It's more of a motivation to really understand what I need to do to get to that number one spot, how hard I need to work for next year to keep that.

"I want to be more of a dominant player and I want to be at the top of the world ranking list for a long, long time. I know how hard I had to work this year, so I got to work extra hard next year."

Day finished tied for 10th in Atlanta at the weekend.
