Rory McIlroy has blasted into contention after a late charge in round one of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
The Northern Irishman is closing in on leader Rafael Cabrera-Bello, who tops the board with nine under par and an overall 63.
The Spaniard is just ahead of Marcel Siem, who claimed a seven-under score by the end of the opening round.
McIlroy displayed impressive form on the Emirates course and managed to hit seven birdies, which launched him up the leaderboard.
"Seeing nine under on the leaderboard is tough," McIlroy told Sky Sports News. "You just have to stay patient, bide your time and create opportunities, but not force it.
"I think I've matured as a golfer and I knew the back nine is definitely more scoreable."
Englishman Lee Westwood finished the day in join 20th on 69.
