Tiger Woods: ‘The game has changed’

Tiger Woods says that his competitors have changed since his days as world number one.

Former world number one Tiger Woods has observed that the stars of golf have “switched” since his days of success.

The 35-year-old, who has slipped down to 27 in the world rankings, said that a number of “new faces” have been dominating in the last couple of years.

"There have been a ton of new faces out here winning golf tournaments - first time winners. So the game is probably switching a little bit,” Woods told reporters.

"There were a ton of years there where Phil [Mickelson], myself, Vijay [Singh], Ernie [Els], Goose (Retief Goosen), Jim [Furyk] were all winning a bunch of tournaments.

"And now there are a lot of new guys, so the game's changing and it’s fun to see."

The American professional, who took a break from golf after details of his personal life emerged, has been plagued with Achilles and knee problems. However, Woods has insisted that he is ready to compete at the upcoming WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

"I'm just focused on trying to win golf tournaments, that's it,” he added. "I'm good to go. The docs gave me the clearance, so here I am.

“I started practising a couple of weeks ago, which was nice, and I was close to playing last week, but again the doctors advised me that maybe I should take another week.

"I started pushing it pretty hard [in training] and I feel good now."

The 14-time major winner makes his return at the Invitational after three months out on August 4.
