Darren Clarke has admitted that he was surprised to see Tom Watson named as captain of the the US Ryder Cup team.
Watson will take charge of the American side for the competition in Gleneagles in 2014 and Clarke believes that Europe need to name a captain with a "huge presence" to match Watson's appointment.
The Northern Irishman said: "A lot of people, myself included, were surprised when Tom was appointed.
"It's a big statement and brilliant for the event as there are few more iconic figures in golf.
"Maybe we have to have a look and consider other people as well. Whoever stands on that stage opposite Tom Watson needs a huge presence."
Europe will defend the trophy in 2014 following their dramatic victory in Medinah in September.
