Bryson DeChambeau, the only amateur in the field at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, has taken a one-shot lead after the first round of the tournament, outshining the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.
DeChambeau, who won last year's US Amateur Championship, carded an eight-under-par round of 64 to lead by one after the first day at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
The 22-year-old made one eagle, seven birdies and a bogey in his round to finish ahead of world number five Henrik Stenson (-7).
McIlroy is joint-third with Branden Grace on six-under, while world number one Spieth is four behind DeChambeau following an opening 68.
DeChambeau describes himself as a "golf scientist" and approaches the game in a novel way by having all of his irons cut to the same length and only changing the degree of loft on each so that he does not need to change his posture or swing.
