The Swede hit eight birdies during Thursday's play to gain a slender advantage over a group of eight players who ended the round on five-under-par.
A further eight players, including Steve Stricker, sat a shot further adrift, while Patrick Reed and Keegan Bradley finished alongside 11 others who were three shots back on a clustered leaderboard.
The top British effort came from England's Brian Davis, who shot a round of 69 to end the opening day in a tie for 53rd position.
