Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy currently sits six shots behind leader Hideki Matsuyama after the second round of the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai.
The 27-year-old, who was seven shots off the pace after the opening round, registered a five-under-par 67 in the second round to close the gap, but Matsuyama remains in control after a round of 65 from the Japanese.
Scotland's Russell Knox sits three behind the leader after a second successive 68, while England's Paul Casey is part of a four-man group level with McIlroy on seven-under at Sheshan International.
Rickie Fowler is currently six-under, while Lee Westwood is one shot behind the American entering the third round.
