Sergio Garcia hopes that the rain in Pennsylvania does not make the Merion course unplayable during the US Open.

Sergio Garcia believes that the downpour in Pennsylvania could make for tough conditions in the US Open.

The tournament returns to Merion Golf Club for the first time in 32 years this week, but a sodden course awaits the players after it was battered by the remnants of tropical storm Andrea.

"It is tough," the Spaniard told reporters. "We all love playing every single tournament in hard, fast conditions, but unfortunately that's not the case this week.

"We can't control the weather. That's something that it's always been there in our sport and we have to deal with it.

"Hopefully we won't get any more rain, not for us but for the course itself, to make it as playable as possible and we'll try to do our best from there."

Garcia tees off alongside Stewart Cink and Padraig Harrington.
