Wyndham Clark fends off the challenge of Rory McIlroy to win his first major title at the US Open in Los Angeles.

Wyndham Clark has won the US Open after fending off the challenge of Rory McIlroy to win by one shot at Los Angeles Country Club.

The American - who only won his first PGA Tour title at the start of May - defied bogeying 15 and 16 to edge out McIlroy, who will feel that he came up short in his search for a fifth major.

Although the Northern Irishman regularly found greens in regulation, he made just one birdie - that coming on the first hole, the easiest par five - and a bogey on the 14th hole ultimately cost him.

Nevertheless, Clark had initially opened up an advantage on the back nine, with a birdie on the same hole providing him with a three-shot lead with four holes to play.

Dropping shots on the following two holes upped the tension at the quirky Californian course which few people will have fond memories of, but Clark brilliantly created tap-in pars on 17 and 18 to seal a famous win.

In total, the new world number 13 hit four birdies and four bogeys on Sunday, in sharp contrast to joint third-round leader and playing partner Rickie Fowler who made seven bogeys on the way to shooting a 75 to finish in a share of fifth.

World number one Scottie Scheffler did enough to claim third - ending the tournament three shots adrift of Clark - despite birdies on 13 and 16.

Cameron Smith was fourth, benefitting from a 67, but it was England's Tommy Fleetwood who shot the round of the day, firing in a 63 and only missing out on equalling the record for joint-lowest major round with a missed putt from a short distance on the last.

Min Woo Lee joined Fowler and Fleetwood in a tie for fifth, while Jon Rahm closed with a 65 to finish with a share of 10th place. body check tags ::
