Colin Montgomerie: 'USA must make changes to Ryder Cup approach'

Former player and captain Colin Montgomerie believes that the USA will have to change their approach to match Europe in the Ryder Cup.

Former Ryder Cup player and captain Colin Montgomerie has claimed that the USA need to change their strategy if they are to achieve success in the tournament again.

Europe have dominated the event in recent years, with Paul McGinley guiding them to a sixth victory from seven at Gleneagles last month, and Montgomerie believes that a change of approach could be required for the Americans.

"Being a European, we're very happy with what we tend to do," the Scot told reporters. "But having lost eight out of the last 10 Ryder Cups, you would feel the PGA of America would have to change things somehow.

"Is it a two-year process, a one-year process, is it 12 picks for the captain, is it the [top] 12 in the world rankings? We happen to have putted better than the American team over the last few Ryder Cups and that's why we've won.

"Why we have done that, I'm not sure, but eight European wins out of the last 10 is beyond a coincidence so there must be something that's either very, very good with us or not so with the American set-up."

Paul Azinger, who guided America to their last victory in 2008, has been tipped as a possible candidate to captain the team again in two years.
