Ryder Cup rookie Patrick Reed holds his nerve on the final hole to beat Henrik Stenson in the Ryder Cup singles.

Henrik Stenson missed a putt on the 18th hole to hand Patrick Reed and the USA a point in the Ryder Cup singles this afternoon.

A birdie on the par-four second put Stenson in command early on, but Reed rallied with birdies of his own on six and eight, which put him 1 Up.

During that period, Reed was involved in some verbal altercations with some home supporters as he put his finger to his lip, insinuating that they should keep quiet.

However, it seemed that American's confidence had gotten the better of him on the ninth when he could only produce a bogey six, with Stenson duly obliging to bring the match back to all-square.

The Swede failed to build on that, though, as consecutive birdies on 11 and 12 put Reed back in control of the contest at 2 Up, although he did then surrender that on the 13th with a missed par attempt. The 14th was halved, but a double-bogey six from Reed on 15 saw the score go to all-square once again.

There was nothing to split the two players on 16 and 17, which meant that the contest would be decided on the 18th. Reed was inches away from a putt for an eagle, but it didn't prove costly as Stenson failed to convert his birdie chance.
