Interview: Team England gymnast Lynne Hutchison

Team England gymnast Lynne Hutchison tells Sports Mole how she felt to miss out on a podium finish in her final event.

Earlier today, elated Welsh gymnast Frankie Jones bowed out of the sport with a Commonwealth gold medal in the ribbon final, the last event of the rhythmic competition.

It was a different story for Team England hopeful Lynne Hutchison, meanwhile, who had to settle for fifth with a score of 13.550. Her qualifying score in her strongest event - a 13.900 - would have been good enough for bronze on the day, but her hopes of a podium finish were dashed as she was edged out by Malaysia's Poh San Wong and Canadian powerhouse Patricia Bezzoubenko.

Moments after the final, Sports Mole grabbed a quick chat with Hutchison to find out how she was feeling.

Overall, how much have you enjoyed Glasgow?
"I've had a really good time. I've loved not only competing but the whole atmosphere of a multi-sport event. I love being in the village, seeing other athletes, other countries and mixing with them. The arena's so nice and I've got lots of people from home supporting me so it's been pretty good."

You qualified with the second-best ribbon score, but didn't quite match that today. How do you feel about that?
"Well, looking at the scores I feel a bit disappointed because I was so close to a bronze medal, but I had already exceeded my expectations by making this ribbon final so I shouldn't really be upset with myself.

"My routine wasn't quite as good as it was in qualification, but it was still pretty good and I really wanted to finish this competition like that.

"I've received so many messages about specifically my ribbon routine from people telling me how much they enjoyed it and how powerful it was. I just wanted to show them that again today."

What's next? Is this a good platform for the future?
"I haven't really made plans for my next thing yet because I've been focussing everything on this competition.

"I don't think any of us are thinking about Rio 2016 right now, but the levels for individuals in Great Britain has really risen this year. It's definitely going up and up."

The artistic section of the gymnastics competition gets underway on Monday in Glasgow.
