Scotland's silver medallist Daniel Keatings: 'British gymnasts are a force'

Scottish silver medallist Daniel Keatings declares that gymnasts from across Great Britain are a force to be reckoned with after a strong day at the Commonwealth Games.

Team Scotland gymnast Daniel Keatings has hailed the "strength in depth" of British gymnastics after a dominant day at the Commonwealth Games.

England stormed to the gold medal in the men's team final, with Scotland picking up silver to break the Australia-Canada-England trio that have shared the event's medals at every Games since 1978.

Wales weren't far behind in fifth and Keatings expressed his excitement about the future of the Great British team. He told Sports Mole: "It shows the strength in depth that we've got in the squad with England and Scotland one and two.

"At the World Championships later in the year we're going to be joined together as a team and it's already shown that we're going to be quite some force."

Keatings's scores in the team final have seen him qualify for the individual all-around final tomorrow and three of the apparatus finals - floor, pommel horse and horizontal bar - on Thursday and Friday.

His chances are thought to be particularly good in the pommel horse final, with England's Louis Smith - the 2012 Olympics silver medallist - anticipating a close contest between himself, Keatings and Max Whitlock, the favourite for the all-around title.

Keatings's qualification score of 14.533 was the third best, but way behind Whitlock and Smith's respective totals of 15.733 and 15.700, and he is confident of challenging the English duo.

"Max did his hardest routine yesterday in the qualifiers and me and Louis are going to both up it in the final," he added.

"I made a bit of a mistake in qualification, I'm not happy about that but it gives me room to improve and I'm really looking forward to it because I've got nothing to lose."

Scotland's silver in the team final today was their first medal in the gymnastics this year and their first gymnastics team medal ever at the Commonwealth Games.

The women made it double delight for England at the SSE Hydro, with Wales taking a surprise bronze in the final.
