Team Wales gymnast Jessica Hogg: 'Hydro crowd helped massively'

Team Wales gymnast Jessica Hogg was delighted with the team's performance on day one of the artistic gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games.

Welsh gymnast Jessica Hogg has expressed her delight at the young team's display on day one of the Commonwealth Games artistic gymnastics at the SSE Hydro.

The 18-year-old from Cardiff, alongside fellow teenagers Lizzie Beddoe, Georgina Hockenhull, Angel Romaeo and Raer Theaker, achieved the third-highest mark at the halfway stage of the team final.

"We've performed in big arenas, but this is the biggest one and the loudest. It gave me a good boost," Hogg told Sports Mole.

"When you're on the apparatus, you have everyone shouting for you and it helps you 10 times more than a typical day in training. It's amazing to hear everyone cheering for you.

"The crowd and the whole atmosphere was really good. We all did our best and couldn't have asked for any more. It helped us get through our routines."

Wales have already had plenty of success in the gymnastics after the Francesca Jones-led rhythmic team won eight medals, but Hogg doesn't think that it's put extra pressure on the artistic team.

"No, it's taken it off us I think," she added. "It's also very exciting because everyone knows how good Welsh gymnastics can be now."

If Wales do win a medal, they will break the Australia-England-Canada trio that have won gold, silver and bronze respectively in every Commonwealth team final since 1998.

England currently lead the way with a score of 85.390, with Australia second on 83.882 and Wales third with 81.398 ahead of the floor and beam exercises tomorrow.
