The first half started in frantic fashion, with both sides scoring goals frequently but neither team managing to build a clear lead in the early stages of the match.
However, Sweden improved as the first period continued and a flurry of late attacks from the Scandinavians gave them a 15-12 advantage at half-time.
Hungary started the second half superbly and quickly brought themselves back into the match.
The contest was tight until the final moments in front of an excited crowd and despite a late goal from Ferenc Ilyes, Sweden held on to keep their gold medal hopes alive.
