Natalie Melmore admits that Joe Edwards "played better than me" in their Commonwealth Games gold medal shootout.

Natalie Melmore has admitted that she was second best on the day after succumbing to a 21-15 defeat at the hands of Jo Edwards in the women's singles final.

The 24-year-old, who won gold in the event four years ago in Delhi, battled back after a poor start which saw her trail Edwards 13-1 after eight ends.

Melmore managed to bring the score to within five shots, but was unable to complete the comeback with her opponent winning gold.

"Obviously it's disappointing but at the end of the day Jo played brilliantly and I can't take it away from her. She is a great lady and deserved the win," Melmore told reporters.

"I gave it a good effort – I'm glad I did and I'm glad I stuck in there because it ended up being quite a good game but she just played better than me so I can't take it away from her.

"A gold four years ago and a silver medal now – I can't really complain, to be honest, and in five minutes' time I will probably be happy with it."

Colleen Piketh of Canada secured a bronze medal in the event after edging out Northern Ireland's Catherine McMillen.
