The son of Australian motorcycling legend Wayne Gardner will make his racing debut at this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix in Misano, Italy.

Sixteen-year-old Remy Gardner, who received a wildcard entry into next month's Moto3 race in Australia, will stand in for Kiefer Racing's injured rider Luca Grunwald in Italy.

"I wasn't expecting to be on a GP bike this weekend to be honest, but it's the perfect way to prepare for Phillip Island in October," The AAP quotes Gardner as saying.

"It's always unfortunate when someone is injured and can't compete, but I'm going to grab the opportunity with both hands and make the most of it. I'm hoping to learn as much as I can this weekend and it will be great experience for me."

Gardner's father won the first 500cc world championship event in Australia 25 years ago.
