Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff has given his gratitude to supporters who have wished him well after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
The news was confirmed yesterday after the 68-year-old former Barcelona star learned the extent of the disease.
On Twitter, Cruyff wrote: "Thank you for all your support."
The three-time European Footballer of the Year, who used to be a heavy smoker, underwent double heart bypass surgery in 1991 during his eight-year spell as manager of Barcelona.
Former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti tweeted: "Dear @johancruyff you have always been a winner and so you'll be this time. Best regards."
Cruyff won the Eredivisie title eight times while playing for Ajax.
