Lille players were forced to flee from the pitch at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy after being attacked by their own fans following their 1-1 draw with Montpellier HSC on Saturday.
Hundreds of supporters of the struggling Ligue 1 side invaded the field of play after the full-time whistle to confront the home team, who had just gone a sixth game without a win.
Lille are currently second bottom of the French first division, and fans of the club have directed their anger towards the players and club president Gerard Lopez in recent weeks.
According to ESPN, striker Nicolas Pepe and defender Adama Soumaoro were struck, and there were numerous other flashpoints between fans and players as stewards struggled to control the situation.
"They are fans who lost control, but they are also fans who are unhappy and sad," Lille manager Christophe Galtier told reporters after the game. "I don't accept that my players are punched, that my players are treated this way."
The incident at Lille happened on the same day that West Ham United fans invaded the London Stadium pitch and protested against the club's board as the team fell to a 3-0 home defeat to Burnley.
