Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard is named as an ambassador for the National Literacy Trust to encourage disadvantaged children to read.

Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard will try to encourage disadvantaged children to read after being named as an ambassador for the National Literacy Trust.

The 36-year-old, who has his own series of books called Frankie's Magic Football, will continue his role in the Premier League Reading Stars programme.

"I am delighted to take up the role as an ambassador for the National Literacy Trust and help to further their work in supporting disadvantaged children across the UK to discover the joy of reading and develop their literacy skills," the Daily Mail quotes Lampard as saying.

"It's very easy for young people to get distracted by computer games and television but the importance of getting children to enjoy reading was the inspiration behind my own books."

Lampard will discuss his favourite books and set reading challenges via an online video as part of the Reading Star programme.
