Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand withdraws from David Beckham's charity match at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will play no part in Saturday's charity match at Old Trafford due to a reported calf injury.

The 37-year-old, who retired from football in the summer, was due to pull on his boots once again in a Great Britain and Ireland team captained by David Beckham and managed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferdinand would have played alongside Chelsea skipper John Terry for the first time since the Blues defender was banned for racially abusing Rio's brother Anton in 2011.

A statement on United's official website confirmed that Ferdinand, as well as Andy Cole, Fabio Cannavaro, Alessandro Nesta and Massimo Ambrosini, would not be taking part in the match.

According to The Guardian, Ferdinand, who now works as a football pundit for BT Sport, is carrying a calf injury.

The game is in aid of UNICEF.
