Phil Jones angers Manchester United fans with Munich tribute

Phil Jones receives heavy criticism from Manchester United fans after a Twitter post on his account in tribute to the Munich air disaster promotes the defender's brand.

Phil Jones felt the wrath of Manchester United supporters last night after he posted a tribute on Twitter to the Munich air disaster.

Eight United players were among the 23 fatalities when British European Airways flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport on February 6, 1958.

A number of Louis van Gaal's current United squad paid their respects to those that lost their lives on social networking sites, including Jones.

However, the 23-year-old's tribute, which was the iconic picture of the team's final match in Belgrade before the tragedy, was accompanied by his own branding.

Many United fans have since responded directly to the centre-back, informing him that the act of self-promotion lacked class.

@UtdRantcast said: "Phil mate. Get your people to take the branding off that, yeah?"

Meanwhile, @Malachians added: "Jesus Christ is there anything sacred from branding?"

@Watpoae weighed in with: "Remove that PJ4 branding from that image, none of those lads died so you could shamelessly self promote yourself. Disgusting"

There have been suggestions that Jones's account is run by a PR company, although this has not been confirmed.
