The BBC has claimed that a reporting team were detained by police in Qatar for two days after they were arrested for trying to meet with migrant workers in relation to their coverage of the 2022 World Cup.
Journalist Mark Lobel, a cameraman, driver and translator were all arrested prior to an arranged public relations tour of accommodation for low-paid workers, which was an official government-run event.
It has been claimed by the Qatari government that the BBC employers were arrested by the authorities for trespassing on private property, but Lobel wrote in a statement on the BBC News website that the group were questioned without being "accused of anything directly".
He added: "An hour into my grilling, one of the interrogators brought out a paper folder of photographs which proved they had been trailing me in cars and on foot for two days since the moment I'd arrived."
According to The Guardian, FIFA has now decided to look into the claims. A statement read: "Any instance relating to an apparent restriction of press freedom is of concern to FIFA and will be looked into with the seriousness it deserves."
Lobel was released without charge, but claims that their equipment is yet to be returned.
