Paul Gascoigne is accused of common assault and being drunk and disorderly.

Paul Gascoigne has been arrested for an alleged drunken attack on his ex-wife and a train station security guard.

The former England international is accused of grabbing the station worker by the throat and turning on former spouse Sheryl as she intervened, according to The Mirror.

Gascoigne, who has battled alcoholism in the past, was held overnight in a cell before being bailed following the incident in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio midfielder's arrest on suspicion of common assault and being drunk and disorderly comes just months after he underwent rehab in the US.

Witnesses claim that Gascoigne arrived at the Stevenage train station intoxicated and shouting abuse. When the security guard approached, the retired footballer is said to have seized him by the throat.

Sheryl's efforts to restrain Gascoigne allegedly resulted in him grabbing her by the arm.

"Police arrived on the scene a short time later and made the arrest," a police spokesperson is quoted as saying. "There are two allegations of common assault. One was against a man who is a station security guard.

"The allegation there is the 46-year-old man grabbed the security guard around the neck and the other allegation is regarding a member of the public who arrived at the station while this was happening.

"The accusation is that he grabbed their arm."

Gascoigne earned 57 caps for England between 1988 and 1998, scoring 10 goals.
