A police photographer has revealed that he remains 'haunted' by the scenes that he witnessed after Oscar Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home in South Africa in February 2013.
Morne du Toit was called to the Silverwoods Country Estate in Pretoria on Valentine's Day two years ago to take pictures of the bloody scene where Steenkamp was shot.
Pistorius is currently serving a five-year jail sentence for the culpable homicide (manslaughter) of his girlfriend, who died as a result of four gunshots fired by the Paralympic champion through a toilet door.
According to IOL News, Du Toit has not been able to work since he was admitted to Eugene Marais Hospital with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder three weeks after Steenkamp's death.
"All the walls from the main bedroom to the front door had blood splatters," Du Toit is quoted as saying. "The smell of death was prominent at the front door. I still remember the scene very clearly.
"I have continuous dreams of lying in a bath of blood. These thoughts flash through my mind - it haunts me and keeps me awake."
Pistorius, who has six Paralympic gold medals to his name, escaped a murder conviction after claiming that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired the gun.
