Paul Elliott has resigned from the Football Association with immediate effect following an alleged racism row.
The 48-year-old former Chelsea and Celtic defender was a member of the organisation's judicial panel.
He has also stepped down from his role at anti-racism body Kick It Out, where he has been a trustee since 1996.
The Sun claims that Elliott recently used discriminatory language via a text message to former Charlton Athletic defender Richard Rufus.
"Earlier this week, a former friend and business colleague made public a text message I sent him, in which I used a term which is widely known as being derogatory to my own community," Elliott said in a statement.
"I regret using it; it is inappropriate and not part of my everyday vocabulary. As an advocate of high-standards of public behaviour, and integrity in public life, I know the use of this word sends out mixed messages and contradicts my position as a Kick It Out trustee.
"I will continue to be active in other projects in what I believe to be a true and just cause."
Elliott became the first black footballer to receive a CBE earlier this month for his services to equality and diversity in the sport.
