Bradley Wiggins is given a knighthood as one of 78 British Olympic and Paralympic athletes to be honoured.

London Olympics gold medallist and Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins has been honoured with a knighthood in the 2013 New Year Honours list.

There is a special list to honour 78 of the Olympic and Paralympic athletes who took part in the home Olympic Games.

Along with Wiggins, Paralympic cyclist Sarah Storey will become a dame and sailing legend Ben Ainslie is also knighted.

"I never ever imagined that I would ever become a knight so it's an incredible honour," the BBC quotes Wiggins as saying.

"There's a slight element of disbelief and it will take a while to sink in."

Katherine Grainger, Victoria Pendleton, Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and David Weir all become CBEs, the honour Wiggins already held, while outside of the Olympics tennis player Andy Murray is given an OBE.
