The Wales FA could be forced to increase the security protection on Gareth Bale after two Macedonian fans invaded the pitch to approach him.

The Football Association of Wales will review its security of Gareth Bale and the rest of the national team after the world's most expensive player was harassed by pitch-invading fans on Friday.

Real Madrid's £85m signing did not feature for Wales during their 2-1 defeat in Macedonia in World Cup qualifying, but was approached by two home supporters while warming up at half time.

As it turned out, the Macedonian supporters appeared only to try to hug Bale before the 24-year-old pushed them away, but a spokesman for the FAW has admitted that greater security measures may need to be taken in the future due to the winger's recently enhanced status.

The spokesman told reporters: "Security within the stadium was up to the Macedonian authorities so they should have prevented the fans going onto the pitch and up to Gareth like that.

"It was not just the fans, but it was radio and TV people wanting access... everybody wants a picture of him.

"We will need to look to see if we need to change anything about our security arrangements which as I said have always been strong."

Bale is in the Wales squad for their World Cup qualifier against Serbia on Tuesday, but may not start due to concerns over his fitness.
