Two horses put down after Grand National

Synchronised and According to Pete suffer fatal injuries after falling at the famous Becher's Brook fence at Aintree in the Grand National.

The closest Grand National ever was marred by news that two horses who fell midway through the race had to be put down.

Synchronised, who had been favourite throughout the week and was the mount of champion jockey Tony McCoy, fell at the famous Becher's Brook fence, as did According to Pete.

Both horses suffered fatal injuries and it was announced shortly after Neptune Collonges's photo-finish victory that both horses had to be put down.

Two other horses who fell during the race, Weird Al and Killyglen, are still receiving treatment on the course.

The sad news will undoubtedly overshadow what was an engrossing race and many doubters may call for the race to be reviewed, especially as Ornais and Dooneys Gate also died in the same event last year.
