Widnes Vikings chief executive Julie Gaskell plays down criticism of the club's artificial pitch.

Super League side Widnes Vikings have played down recent criticism of their artificial pitch.

The Stobart Stadium's 'iPitch' was described as an "absolute joke" by Wakefield full-back Richard Mathers over the weekend.

However, the club's chief executive Julie Gaskell believes that there are "no issues" regarding the turf.

"We had four games on the pitch this weekend and you have to bear in mind the extreme weather," she said. "Certainly on Friday night it went down to minus seven.

"The injuries are consistent with those on any surface in those temperatures and we noted there were similar injuries from the game at Salford on Saturday night.

"Our players have been training on a similar surface for the last nine months and there have been no issues. I am sure any problems would have shown up."

The Rugby Football League have recently revealed that they have no problem with the pitch.
